6 Ways To Make Your Life Easier As You Get Older

6 Ways To Make Your Life Easier As You Get Older

Getting old isn’t always fun, but the good news is that there are plenty of steps you can take to make the experience a little bit easier. Here are six of the best.

1. Utilise technology

Technology isn’t just for the young! These days you can find lots of gadgets specifically designed to make life easier as you get older, so be sure to make the most of them. For example, there are accessible smartphones to help you stay connected, automatic pill dispensers so you never miss a tablet and smartwatches that can track your vital signs and detect if you’ve had a fall.

2. Make adjustments to your house

As you age, you might find that your strength, balance, and mobility decline. If that happens, there are certain adjustments you can make at home in order to make your life easier. These include:

  • Handrails in the bath or a seat in the shower
  • Night lights to help you navigate in the dark
  • Lever-operated or motion sensor taps
  • A stairlift or extra banister on the stairs
  • Power-assisted rising beds and chairs
  • Wider doorways
  • Lower kitchen counters

You may be eligible for financial assistance from your local council for some adaptations, so contact them to arrange a needs assessment.

3. Move to assisted living

If living independently is becoming challenging, one option is to move into a care home. This might sound daunting, but facilities such as Signature Care Homes offer purpose-built apartments and access to amenities such as cafes, restaurants, lounges, cinemas, and hair salons, as well as a wide range of social activities. You’ll be able to get all the help you need while still retaining as much of your independence as possible. Assisted living is a particularly good choice for those who live alone or require a greater level of medical care.

4. Get your eyesight and hearing checked

If you find yourself struggling to hear what people are saying in conversations, or it’s difficult to read books or see the TV clearly, that’s a clear sign you should go for a hearing test and/or eye test. Making sure that you have the glasses or hearing aids that you require can go a long way towards improving your quality of life as you get older. Don’t forget to check if you’re eligible for free tests on the NHS.

5. Make an effort to socialise

Going it alone is hard, and having a big social group available to support you will make life much easier as you get older. Plus, it will be more fun! Make an effort to spend time with your friends and family, but also to meet new people by attending events in your local area and joining book clubs or other hobby groups. This is also a fantastic way to stave off feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety.

6. Prioritise your health

Most things in life are easier when you’re fit and healthy, so make your physical and mental wellbeing a priority. You can do this by eating a balanced and nutritious diet, taking regular exercise, and getting out and about in nature. It’s also a good idea to keep your brain active by reading widely, learning new skills, and even simply doing the daily crossword.
